Colt 1855 Sidehammer "Root" Revolver in .28 Cal.                                                        PRICE:  $5,250
The Colt "Root" Revolver (named for the designer E.K. Root) was manufactured in two calibers; .28 and .31.  It was made using a solid frame, sidehammer action, and one piece wrap-around walnut grips.  It was never well accepted because when it got dirty the cylinder would not turn and it was difficult to take apart and clean.  This is a very nice example with a strong cylinder scene, over 90% original bright blue, vivid case colors on the hammer, mostly un-molested screw heads, nice nipples, and the grips retain most all of their varnish.  The action works flawlessly and the bore is very good.  This all numbers matching "Root" was made in 1859 and is one of only 26,000 .28 calibers that were made.  We rarly see them in this condition.

              Colt 1849 6-shot Pocket, .31 Caliber                                                                                  PRICE:  $1,850
Manufactured in 1862, this 6-shot .31 caliber Pocket Model falls in the same serial range as other known 6-shot variants.  It is in excellent original condition, with the exception of the re-blued cylinder.  We believe that the cylinder cracked due to the thinness of the chamber wall, was repaired by relining that chamber and was then reblued.  The gun, serial # 204xxx retains 80% original barrel blue, 70% color case-hardening on the frame, hammer, and rammer, and nearly 100% silver and varnish on the grips and straps.   Interestingly, the two line Hartford address is one of those showing the broken die stamp, with th "L" on COLT, resembling an "I".   These 6-shot variations are considered rare, the total number not known, but estimated at only a few thousand of the 340,000 manufactured, perhaps only one or two percent.    NOTE:  Only gun is for sale, case is no longer available.
